December 26, 1997 -- PACKET ARTICLE DRAWS RECORD CROWDS
The cars were bumper to bumper on Dove Street Christmas night after David Lauderdale’s column “Sea Foam” appeared in the Island Packet. There was an increase in out of state license plates due to recommendations being made by local hotel concierge personnel. Many visitors commented on the unique nature of this experience.
HEARD ON THE STREET
A young boy in the rear of a mini van asked “How deep is that well, really?”
Four senior ladies came by last week in a Mercedes. They asked about contributing a dollar to Deep Well. We said it really wasn’t necessary - they could just donate a canned good. Together they remarked “Impossible, we have just come from dinner and ate everything”.
A gentleman riding by stopped and asked “What do you think my favorite thing is about this street?” We replied instinctively, “The lights?”. He responded “No, it’s that people like you are out here talking to us and having such a good time”.
FACTS OF LIGHT
There are approximately 7,000 lights on Rob’s mighty magnolia tree. It takes about 20 hours to hang those lights. Another 30,000 adorn the neighborhood.
The Stealth Pole created by Rob to hang the lights is actually 28 feet long. Our ladder raises the lights another 12 feet . We are using duct tape at the end for the first time this year and it seems to be working better than ever.
