December 25, 1997 -- DOVE STREET ADOPTS DEEP WELL FAMILY
On a rainy Christmas eve in Hilton Head, a family who had lost everything they owned in a fire recently received a wonderful Christmas gift courtesy of the Dove Street Deep Well Collections.
The family had a fire in September when they were living in Savannah. The father of the family had fallen on difficult times as a fisherman and had not realized that their insurance policy had lapsed. Everything they owned was destroyed and they have had a hard time putting things back together.
The family has 3 young girls aged 14, 13, and 9 years old. While clothes were the primary need, the two oldest daughters had requested jewelry and the youngest requested “anything that belongs to Barbie”. Some articles of clothing and toys were assembled at Deep Well headquarters while Dove Street volunteers used proceeds from the collection well to shop at the trendy, and yet elegantly inexpensive Rue 21 at Shoppes on the Parkway. More than 11 wrapped packages were assembled and distributed to family members including: several pairs of jeans, a pair of overalls, earrings, hair accessories, and necklaces. A knitted sweater was purchased for the father.
A touching moment occurred when Dove Street representatives brought the items to the family’s temporary home on Spanish Wells Road. “You cannot comprehend what this means to me”, said the mother, who then broke into tears while giving the volunteers thanks and big hugs. When told the donations came from Dove Street, she remarked “Thank you and God Bless you All”..
